Mentally Preparing for Competition

Tried and Tested Techniques for Mental Preparation:

  • Visualise success: Imagine yourself performing at your best and achieving your goals. Think about how you would feel at the end of the competition, having won. Imagine being congratulated, celebrating etc.
  • Visualisation can help build confidence and create a stable foundation on which to build upon.
  • Set realistic goals: Break down your training and competition goals into smaller, achievable steps. Work back from the competition date and set both physical and mental tasks, weekly and daily, to help with preperation.
  • Develop a pre-competition routine: Establishing a consistent routine before each competition can help create a sense of familiarity and reduce anxiety. Anything from breathing, meditation and warm up and stretching. Don't dismiss using positive self-talk, it's not crazy, it's not weird, it's completely normal and extrememly helpful.
  • Practice mindfulness: Being fully present in the moment can improve focus and concentration. Mindfulness exercises, such as body scans and sensory awareness, can be incorporated into training sessions and pre-competition rituals.
  • Seek support: Surround yourself with a supportive team, including coaches, training partners, and sports psychologists. They can provide guidance, encouragement, and help you navigate the mental challenges of competition.

By incorporating these techniques into your training regimen, you can enhance your mental preparation for Thai Boxing, MMA, or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competitions. Remember, a strong mind is just as important as a strong body in combat sports.

How can breathing techniques enhance your performance?

Mentally preparing for competition is just as important as physical training. Breathing techniques play a crucial role in enhancing performance in Thai Boxing, MMA, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
